LIPARI
Lipari is the largest and most lively island, with a port city full of life and populated all year round. But its beauties are best appreciated by boat, from which you can admire its wild, rocky coasts and the views that are, to say the least, extraordinary. However, you cannot leave the island without first tasting a glass of Malvasia, the typical wine of Lipari produced from its wonderful vineyards overlooking the sea.
SALINA
It is the green island of the Aeolian Islands, with lush nature and the highest peaks. Some will remember it in the film “Il Postino” which immortalized its natural beauty on the beach of Pollara, one of the most beautiful on the island, set in the spectacular rocks of the cliff. Santa Marina Salina, the main port, is a lively center with many elegant boutiques, cafès and restaurants. Among its naturalistic beauties Salina hosts a splendid wooded area of ferns, the Fossa delle Felci, overlooking the jagged cliffs that surmount the island’s beautiful beaches.
VULCANO
Mud baths and bubbling fumaroles characterize the fascinating island of Vulcano, which takes its name from the Roman god of fire. It is an island with luxuriant flora, populated with black beaches that reveal its volcanic nature, and impressive sea stacks. On Vulcano you can take a bath in its beneficial thermal waters or dive into its dazzling blue sea, perhaps from one of the splendid coves that can be reached by boat. Whatever corner you choose to visit, you cannot help but be fascinated by the unique nature that lives here in perfect harmony with man.
PANAREA
A postcard island known for its lively nightlife, white villages, narrow alleys and turquoise sea. It is part of a small archipelago that includes the islets of Basiluzzo, Spinazzola, Lisca Bianca, Dattilo, Bottaro and Lisca Nera.
Panarea is a trendy hangout and one of the most popular tourist destinations, but the real wonder of the island are its breathtaking natural views that alternate gentle slopes with towering vertical cliffs. The shining waters that surround it, then, are a real paradise in which to experience unrestrained pleasure.
STROMBOLI
Surmounted by the homonymous volcano that watches over it like an old guardian, the island of Stromboli is a natural oasis of black beaches hidden among lava cliffs, bright white houses and natural spectacles such as that of the imposing “Sciara del Fuoco”, the slope from which the volcano’s lava flow descends silently to the sea. Flanked by the volcanic islet of Strombolicchio, which houses the Navy lighthouse, Stromboli is dotted with tiny hamlets such as Ginostra and San Vincenzo, from which you can admire extraordinary sunsets. The Stromboli volcano is the most active in Europe and offers puffs of smoke that follow one another quietly throughout the day, as well as spectacular eruptions to be admired especially at sunset, when the boats rush in to observe the lava flows that reach the sea.
FILICUDI AND ALICUDI
These are the islands furthest to the West, the wildest and, perhaps, the most authentic. Filicudi and Alicudi are a few kilometers of land lying on a thriving marine life and on craters left by volcanoes that are now inactive. On Filicudi, the paved road connects the few, small hamlets a few minutes away from each other, which end up at the lookout at the top of the cliff. The silent Alicudi is home to a handful of islanders, just 80, a tiny port and an impressive wilderness interrupted only by the small mule tracks that cross the island like microscopic rivers. Automobiles are banned here: the only means of transportation are the gentle mules which, in addition to people, move the shopping and the other few objects.
